Audition

We have auditioned Lewis Hodson as we are wanting him to star as our main character and singer within our music video as we feel it shows some resemblance to the main singer in Madness and he also is an Drama A level student showing he will be able to show good confidence in front of the camera.

We gave Lewis a section of the lyrics and got him to learn them and put him in front of the camera and got him to mime the song to see how good he is and to see if he will suit the main character we gave him this section five minutes before to see how he copes under pressure as we shall be asking him to do a lot of things that may just come up on the spot and he has no chance to prep it.

Lewis is a very confident actor and we have given him the part of are main actor due to his confidence and dedication and the way he can improvise in front of the camera and also his ability to mime is one of the main key things in why we have given him the part due the miming is the key thing within a music video if they cannot mime then there is no point having them as a main actor.

BBC social class questionaire

I have done some research into the exact social class that we are aiming are music video towards so i interviewed i wide range of people to then see what class catergory they are in and then i was able to make up an average of the overall social class that we are aiming our music video towards. Firstly i interviewed Julie Hordon on the BBC social class questionaire to see what catergory she fell in to as we found that she is interested in our overall idea and feel like she would watch and listen to the music that we have chosen.
We found that Julie fitted in to the established middle class catergory and we found this rather interesting that a middle class person would enjoy this. We then interviews Sally Bailey who came under traditional working class and also Mel nicholson who came under technical middle class so overall we are looking at low middle class and working class people who will be interested at our music video and now that we have established this it will be easier on research on what we should be including in our music video.

This social class seems to like to see  a lot going on and love to see lots of different things going on all at once which will keep them entertained and drawn into the music video. We are going to appeal to them by making sure that there is some form of a story line and a lot of the band featured. We are choosing to do this so because then there will be more than one thing going on at once so it keeps the TA drawn in and hopefully will encourage them to watch the music video more than once as hopefully there will be some enigma as well so they wasn't to watch it again to find out the answer and not because they are unable to figure out what is going on.

One On One Interviews!

With interviewing two different people of different ages and asking them the same questions we found that they both answered with different answers but yet found that they both wanted to see the same things within the music video as we found that they both don't want to see women being exploited and both want to see some thing original but something that is also different. They both seemed to like our ideas which was a great confidence boost as hearing from people of different ages say that they both want to see the same things and would love to see our ideas be created was great to hear.

With us receiving this information from both of the people we interviewed meant that a majority vote would enjoy watching our music video from all ages, social class and also gender. The reason for us to do a one on one interview with people of different age and class is so that we were able to ask the same questions and yet receive different answers and compare them to see which age, gender and class we will be aiming it at.

Both of the people that we interviewed both explained that they did not like to see women exploited through out a music video and thinks that it is down grading to women where as we found when we gave questionnaires out to males we found that the top answer for what they are wanting to see through out music videos are half naked women and we found that most of the music videos that they put down as their favourites where music videos that consisted of women being exploited through out.

Focus group!

We chose to do a focus as the people in it would be able to bounce their answers of each other and we found that we received a greater response from them and they were able to disagree and agree with each other an explain the reason of why they thought it. We interviewed people that where of a different age and of different ethnicity because we want to be able to please all audiences or be able to try to please every one we can and receive a great response from every one we can. We asked them questions on how they would like to see the music videos structured on the hope that they would pic the one that we have chosen which they did and also on what they would like to see which all matched with all our ideas.

Using people from different backgrounds, social class, age and ethnicity we were able to obtain a great amount of information due to them all having totally different preferences. After collecting this information we was able to compare what we had and saw that all the information that we collected was the same and the hole reason for using this technique was so that we was hoping that the people that we are interviewing would dis agree or would have some form of misunderstanding so that they would have to discuss and level it out with answer.

Target Audience Research.

We chose as a group to make some questionnaires and then hand them out to people our age and to the older generation so that we were able to see what each of them liked and didn't like to help us be able to appeal to both of the audiences.

Surprisingly we found that every one bar 3 chose indie rock and every one 31+ plus chose indie rock. This instantly shows us that this is a popular genre to the younger and older generation. This should hopefully mean that the music video we create is able to appeal to them both. we found in the research that they are fond of this genre because of the lyrics and the melody. On a hole they all prefer narrative and performance based music videos. Only one chose it to be upbeat.

The questionnaires show that people especially females are sick of seeing women being objectified and exploited on their televisions so we are going to avoid this.

After all the research that we have done we have found that some of our ideas did not appeal to the audience so we discussed and went over our original ideas to see what we can change to appeal to both of the audiences. As we found that they preferred it to have a narrative we have decided to have a more conceptual music video as ours was more conjunctive with just showing the band and people partying but now if we story bored it a bit more with a narrative then hopefully it will have a greater success. We then went on to discuss about filming in separate rooms and having different themes in different rooms say Alice in wonderland and a 80's theme in another.

Audience Theories

Laura Mulvey 'Gaze Theory:

In the eassay ''visual pleasure and nrrative cinema'', Laura Mulvey introduced the concept of The male Gaze as a feature of power asymmetry. in film, the male gaze occurs when the audience is put into perspective of a heterosexual man. A scene may linger on the curves of a womens body, for instance.  The theory suggests that the male gaze denies women human agency, relegating them to the status of objects, hence the women reader and the women viewer must experience the texts narrative secondarily, by identifying with a man's perspective. Basically, we watch media through a 'male camera'.

Mulvey identifies three ''looks'' or perspectives that occur in film which serve to sexually objectify women. The first is the perspective of the male character on screen and how he percieves the female chracter. The second is the perspective of the spectator as they see the female character on screen. The third  ''look'' joins the first two looks together it is the male audience member's perspective of the male character in the film. this thir perspective allows the male audience to take the female character as his own personal sex object because he can relate himself, through looking to the male character in the film.

Audience Thoeries

Goodwin and mulvey theories

Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form:

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.

Genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography.
Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist vocalist.

Voyeaurism is present in many music videos, especially in the treatment of femailes, but also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screeens, cameras, etc.

There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.

Audience Theories

 Toderov
-5 stages
1-equilibrium (state normality)
2-disruption (something goes wrong)
3-recognisation (some one recognises the problem)
4-repair (try + fix)
5-new equilibrium (back to stage (or new))

Audience theories

  Stuart Hall
'Reception theory'

*Encode-Loading a text with meaning
*Decode-Taking those meanings + creating a personal reading

3 types of Readings
-Preferred reading 'get it'
-Regotiated reading 'i think so'
-Oppositioanl reading 'totally different to the encoders preferred reading'

Audience theories

Blumer & Katz

-Highlighted 5 areas of gratifications used by audiences.
1. Escape- escape reality
2. Social interaction- create personal relationships with chracters or to create conversation/ Common ground in real world;
3. Identify- see themselves in circumstance or character. Give role models.
4. Inform & educate- gain an understanding of the world; surveilance.
5. Entertain- pure entertainment and nothing else.

Target audience analysis

Age- The age that we are looking at the target is a variety such as mid teens to around fifty as the song is a 80's song which means it will instantly appeal to an older audiences as a song and with us modernizing the music video meaning that it will appeal to a younger audience as well as an older generation that grew up during this era of music. We think that this will also help introduce this forgotten genre back to the modern day and hopefully reintroduce it and restore it to a popular genre.

Gender- This type of music is aimed at male and female audiences because the manly performance based side of it appeals to the male gender. We will not be exploiting women in a sexual manner with them wearing barely any thing they are going to be fully clothed maybe with shorts and skirts on but we will not be objectifying females as we as females do not think it is right . Our questionaires show that males prefer that but we feel as females our selves that shouldnt be the way to increase the audience.

Social Class- The social class that we our aiming at is more likely to be lower classs and maybe at the lower middle classs due to the realism of their songs and music videos it shows the real world and it isnt cushioned to the audience. People from a lower class are stereotypically low paid and from a rougher area who like to listen to music that they them selves are able to relate to.
